DSA-Sec Application Guide: How to Choose, Apply and Understand the Outcome
DSA-Sec lets a P6 student apply to a secondary school based on a strength, strong interest or clear potential in a talent area. The student must still take the PSLE.
Choose a talent the student wants to keep developing throughout secondary school.
The 2026 application period has ended. Selection outcomes were released by 28 August. Students with offers can submit their school preferences from 19 October, 9am to 23 October, 4.30pm. Final allocation is released with the PSLE results, tentatively on 24 or 25 November.
Before you apply
A student may apply based on talent, potential, passion and character. Previous experience can help, but it isn’t compulsory.
Understand these 2 conditions first:
- The student must still achieve a PSLE score that qualifies for a Posting Group offered by the school. They don’t need to meet the school’s usual cut-off point.
- A student admitted through DSA-Sec can’t submit school choices during S1 Posting or transfer to another secondary school after the PSLE results.
This is a commitment to both the school and the selected talent area.
Choose the talent and schools
Start with our DSA school finder. Select a talent to see the schools offering it, then open each school page to compare its location, programme and cut-off points.
Shortlist schools by looking at:
- Whether the talent matches the student’s actual strengths and interests.
- The school’s selection criteria, trial dates and training expectations.
- Whether the application is for the four-year Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) Programme or the six-year Integrated Programme (IP).
- The Posting Groups offered by the school.
- Travel time, school fees and any support the student needs.
NUS High, the School of Science and Technology and the School of the Arts don’t participate in S1 Posting. Read about these DSA-only schools before applying. SOTA applications go directly to SOTA, while Singapore Sports School runs its own admission process.
Submit the application
For a child in an MOE mainstream primary school, a parent logs in to the DSA-Sec Portal with Singpass.
- You can submit up to 3 choices. Each choice is one school and one talent area.
- If you apply for 2 talent areas at the same school, that counts as 2 of your 3 choices.
- The order of these application choices doesn’t matter.
- P5 and P6 results, CCA participation and other school records are shared with the schools automatically.
- You may add up to 10 relevant awards, activities or achievements from outside school.
- Supporting documents aren’t required at first, although a school may ask for them later.
- You can update, withdraw and resubmit before the application period closes.
Prepare the information before opening the form, write every entry in English and check the contact details carefully. Schools need those details to invite shortlisted students.
Students from home schools, international schools, private schools, religious schools and SPED schools follow a separate route. They must first obtain a registration number, allow about 5 working days for processing, then enter their academic and achievement records manually.
Attend the selection
A shortlisted student may be invited for an interview, audition or trial. The format, criteria and dates depend on the school and talent.
Meeting every stated criterion doesn’t guarantee an offer. If you apply to several schools, watch for clashing selection dates and avoid packing the student’s schedule too tightly.
Understand the outcome
There are 3 possible outcomes:
- Confirmed Offer: The school has reserved a place, subject to the student qualifying for a Posting Group it offers.
- Wait List: A place may become available if another student doesn’t take up an offer. In previous years, about half of wait-listed students eventually received a place.
- Unsuccessful: The student wasn’t offered a DSA-Sec place and will take part in S1 Posting, if eligible.
A Confirmed Offer isn’t final until the school is selected during the preference period and the PSLE Posting Group requirement is met.
Rank the school preferences
Students with Confirmed Offers or Wait List outcomes can rank up to 3 schools during the preference period.
Order matters here. Put the school the student most wants first, even if its outcome is Wait List.
One parent can submit the preferences. They can be updated, withdrawn or resubmitted before the deadline. Submitting no preference means withdrawing from DSA-Sec.
For SEC, the student must participate in the selected talent area from Secondary 1 to 4. For IP, talent participation runs from Year 1 to 4, while the commitment to the school lasts all 6 years.
After the PSLE results
If the allocation is successful, the student joins the assigned DSA-Sec school. There is no normal S1 school selection and no transfer to another secondary school.
If it is unsuccessful, submit the S1 school choices by the deadline. The student may still choose schools they applied to through DSA-Sec, except specialised independent schools that don’t take part in S1 Posting.
